Kyle Spencer
Pitching Instructor
Born and raised in southwest Missouri.  Went to school in Miller, MO.  Got multiple scholarship offers but chose Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO due to the fact I wanted to try and play both baseball and basketball.  I attended every Major League tryout camp in the area to get my name and information into the scouting data base so that I didn't have to depend on the 'small' school scouts finding me.  I played every position but Catcher and 2nd base in my three years at college.  After my Junior year I was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 26th round of the 1988 Amateur Baseball Draft.

I reported to the Rangers rookie league team in Butte, MT that played in the Pioneer League.  During that year I went 7-4 and the 7 wins tied the Rangers rookie league record at that time.  At the end of that season I was invited to go to Florida to an instructional league where I played on the same team with some of the best players in the Rangers minor league organization. (Sammy Sosa, Juan Gonzalez, Dean Palmer, Robb Nen, Ivan Rodriguez)

I went to Spring Training in March 1989, the same year we acquired Nolan Ryan, and was assigned to Gastonia, North Carolina in the South Atlantic League.  I was put into the bullpen and went 11-5 and struck out 105 in only 85 innings.  Our team had the best winning percentage in all of baseball that year but was beaten in the Championship series by the Augusta Pirates.

After Spring Training in March 1990 I was assigned to Port Charlotte, Florida in the Florida State League and continued to throw out of the bullpen.  That year I was 8-2 with a 1.63 era but towards the end of the season, when we were making a playoff push, my shoulder started to give me some 'slight' problems.  I did not tell anyone and continued to throw due to not noticing any loss of velocity.  During the offseason I had no lasting effects from the 'slight' problem and never gave it another thought.

Going into Spring Training in March 1991 I was throwing in the 92-94 mph range but after continual throwing for the first two weeks of Spring Training games the coaches started to notice a loss of velocity even though I felt great.  After another week of velocity loss I was sent to a local specialist to be checked out.  He was unable to diagnose the problem so I was sent to Birmingham, Alabama to see Dr. James Andrew's, who later operated on Bo Jackson's famous hip.  After an MRI is was revealed that I had stretched my rotator cuff during the end of the previous season.  I had continued throwing even though I had a bad case of tendonitis in my weakened rotator cuff and stretched the muscle.  The only 'cures' for it was major shoulder surgery where they would cut out the weakened part of the rotator cuff and then sew the muscle back together or stop throwing and go on a very intense weight lifting program to build the muscle back up.  I was put on the weight lifting program for 2 months and then came back throwing in the 92-94 mph range again but was held in Florida so that they could observe my progress closely.  After throwing for about a month my velocity again started to drop and the next step was to have the shoulder surgery.  At that time the sucess rate for shoulder surgeries was very low and the rehab time was very high for this type of surgery.  Due to my age, the time for rehab, and needing to support my family I made the decision to walk away from the game and take a job that had been offered to me previously away from baseball.  I think because of how my career ended it has made me more passionate for educating kids on the proper throwing mechanics and how to take care of their armsOwner/Manager  Jennifer is available to help teams with facility use contracts and memberships.
